Marijuana Decriminalization on the Horizon for Portage

In November 2015, Portage voters will have the opportunity to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. If passed, no one can be charged under the city ordinance for any incident arising out of the “use, possession or transfer of less than 1 ounce of marijuana on private property not used by the public, or transportation of 1 ounce or less of marijuana, by a person who has attained the age of 21 years.”

This proposed amendment arose out of a petition signed by at least 5% of the qualified and registered voters in Portage.

It is important to know though, that this amendment would not stop police officers from arresting and charging individuals with marijuana-related violations under the state law. This amendment is unique to the city ordinance.
